The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a Middle East country with a small population! The UAE is comprised of seven emirates and is the second largest Arab country after Egypt. There has been a long-running dispute between the UAE and Egypt over human rights. It has been difficult for the UAE to adhere to international standards concerning human rights. The UAE has not signed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which guarantees freedom of expression and assembly 🇦🇪 🔛 🌍. As a result there are no guarantees for these rights in the UAE 🇦🇪 ️. Any gathering of more than 20 people requires a permit; political opposition is strictly forbidden.

The UAE recognizes spousal rape as a crime but does not punish it, and it does not consider marital rape to be a crime. Despite granting women the right to vote own property and participate in public life, women still face significant workplace discrimination.

The UAE also has legislation that criminalizes homosexuality and prescribes the death penalty for certain offenses. In 2019, a law was passed criminalizing all consensual sexual relations outside of marriage, with heavy penalties including prison time, and deportation. This law has been widely criticized by human rights groups who claim that it violates the principle of freedom of expression and the right to privacy .

The death penalty has also been criticised by the UAE. The UAE executed 77 people in 2020 🇦🇪. This is the most executions since 1999. These executions mostly involved drug offenses so death sentences often get handed down in unfair trials. The UAE has a history of torture and forced disappearances in addition to the death penalty.

Overall human rights in the UAE remain a major issue 🇦🇪 ️. Despite some progress in certain areas the country still has a long way to go in terms of meeting international standards. The right to freedom of speech and assembly is particularly restricted as is the right to privacy. Womens rights are also limited and the use of the death penalty remains a major concern. The UAE needs to take further steps to protect human rights and ensure that its citizens can enjoy the full range of freedoms. ! .
