The league is divided into two phases. The first phase consists of a round-robin tournament in which all eight teams play each other once, with the top four teams advancing to the second phase. The second phase of the league consists of a playoff tournament, in which the top two teams from the first phase play each other in a one-off match to decide the winner of the league.

The eight teams in the league are the Abu Dhabi Knights, Ajman Royals, Dubai Pulse Secure, Fujairah Pacific Ventures, Sharjah Bukhatir XI, Team Abu Dhabi, Umm Al Quwain Tigers, and Team X1. Each team is allowed to field a maximum of four foreign players in their playing eleven.

The league is sponsored by the Emirates Cricket Board and the title sponsor is the UAE-based telecommunications company du. The league is also broadcast live on du TV.

The league is managed by a governing council, which is composed of nine members. These include representatives from the Emirates Cricket Board, du, the teams, and the International Cricket Council. The council is responsible for all decisions related to the league and its operations.

The league is played in the United Arab Emirates in the months of October and November. This is done in order to avoid the extreme temperatures of the summer months in the region.

The league operates on a salary cap system, with each team having a salary cap of $2 million. This is done in order to ensure that the league remains competitive and that no single team has an advantage over the others.

The matches in the league are played in stadiums located in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman. The league also uses the facilities at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi and the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The league has seen some of the top players from around the world take part in the tournament. International stars such as Chris Gayle, Lasith Malinga, Shahid Afridi, Darren Sammy, Shane Watson, and Kumar Sangakkara have all featured in the tournament.
