UAE Syria
Syria and the UAE have a complex diplomatic history. The Syrian civil conflict has strained relations between these two countries, despite their near proximity, Arab culture and language, and religious links.
After the British left the area and seven sheikhdoms united, the present state of the UAE was established in 1971. Syria, a country that has been independent since 1946, recognized the UAE soon after it was established. In 1974, the two nations opened embassies in each other’s capital cities and established diplomatic relations.
The UAE and Syria upheld cordial ties in the 1980s and 1990s. In the Arab-Israeli war, the UAE backed Syria, and the two nations also collaborated on a number of bilateral commercial, economic, and cultural deals. Syria was a significant investment location for the UAE.
But in 2011, the UAE and Syria’s ties severely worsened. One of the first Arab nations to denounce the violent oppression of its citizens by the Syrian government and demand that President Bashar al-Assad resign was the United Arab Emirates.
Syria responded by accusing the UAE of meddling in its domestic affairs. Syria has also charged the UAE for sponsoring and funding ISIS-like terrorist organizations as well as Syrian opposition groups.
Since then, the UAE has put Syria under a number of economic penalties, including a ban on trade, travel, and investments. Additionally, the UAE has restricted the amount of money that Syrians are allowed to export and barred all flights into and out of Syria.
Additionally, the UAE de-staffed its diplomatic mission in Damascus and closed its embassy there. The UAE has also contributed humanitarian help to millions of Syrians who have been displaced by the civil war and has backed the UN’s attempts to end the conflict in that country.
Syria-related policies of the UAE have generated debate. The UAE has come under fire from many individuals in the area for its support of the Syrian opposition and the economic restrictions it has put on that nation.
The UAE and Syria have maintained communication in recent years despite their tense relations. The UAE restored its embassy in Damascus in 2017 and sent its diplomatic personnel back. This resumption of diplomatic ties was interpreted as an indication that the two sides were prepared to communicate and cooperate to find a peaceful end to the dispute.
The relationship between Syria and the UAE is still in flux. Although some constructive steps have been made in recent years, the battle in Syria is still going on and the environment is still unstable. Although it is uncertain how the two nations’ relationship will change in the future, the UAE will continue to support the UN’s efforts to end the crisis.
At the End
The Syrian civil conflict has strained relations between these two countries, despite their near proximity, Arab culture and language, and religious links. The UAE supported Syria in the Arab-Israeli conflict and the two nations negotiated a series of bilateral agreements on commerce, investment, and cultural interaction. The UAE has banned trade, travel, and investments with Syria since then.
