The AED was introduced as a legal tender in 1973 when the UAE was formed, replacing the absolute monarchy of Qatar, and Bahrainβs riyal. It is issued by the Central Bank of the UAE which is based in Abu Dhabi. The AED is divided into 100 fils and is written in a numeral form as either AED or Dhs.
The AED is a fixed currency, meaning its value is not affected by changes in the value of other currencies. This makes it ideal for travelling to and from Dubai, as well as for trading between countries as its value is unaffected by external factors .
The AED is currently made up of coins in different denominations, and each denomination has a specific design. Coins come in denominations of 1 fils, 5 fils, 10 fils, 25 fils, 50 fils, and 1 Dirham. Paper money comes in denominations of 5 10 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 Dirhams. It features images of monuments, animals, and other national symbols as well as the portrait of the crown prince of Abu Dhabi.
In terms of its exchange rate, the AED is pegged to the US dollar at a rate of 3. 67 AED to 1 USD. The AED is also accepted in countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, however the exchange rate may differ in each of these countries.

Cash withdrawals can be made in both AED and foreign currency, although withdrawals in foreign currencies will incur higher fees.
